Current Event #9

The article talks about an circus act gone wrong. Circus performers were injured when trying to perform a human chandelier. The cable that holds the performers in the air failed and snapped. Eleven people were hurt and were hospitalized.

I can connect to this story because the audience had to suffer from stress when witnessing the incident; which can affect from psychological problems which we learned in psychology. I feel like there should more safety precautions when doing extreme activities like this. When I go see a performance like this I don't want to witness a accident like that; so I hope something is done about this issue.

How does the author support his claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer

The author supports his claim by stating "performers were among 11 people injured Sunday in Providence, Rhode Island, after an apparatus used in their act failed," He states the number of people hurt in the performance. The Author also stated "Eight performers fell when the hair-hang apparatus -- which holds performers by their hair". The author goes into detail about the accident, including that eight people fail while being hung in the air. That is how the author supports his claim, by stating the true facts.

Current Event #8

The flight 370 disappeared 46 days ago. Officials still have not been able to located the missing plane. Families of the victims can now file a law suit against Boeing. The process can be done but its quite complicated since bodies are yet to be found.

This article relates to class because I have been following this story from its beginning for the current events.I think it is correct for the family's victims to file law suits. There love ones have disappeared and I believe Boeing should pay for the consequences. Every time I will aboard a plane, I will be scared.

What is the central idea of the passage and how is it developed and refined throughout the selection? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The central idea of the passage is to inform the latest news about the Flight 370. Boeing can now be sued according to the passage "Attorneys have approached families about compensation lawsuits, but Bajc said the feeling among the relatives is that they do not want to file lawsuits of that type to chase money". The passage also stated "In fact, at least one law firm has already taken the initial steps for a lawsuit. Aviation attorney Monica Kelly said she filed a request for documents and other information in an Illinois court last month in a case against Malaysia Airlines and Boeing. She said she represents Januari Siregar, whose son was aboard Flight 370." The quotes explain the seriousness of the lawsuits against Boeing, stating that lawsuits have already began against Boeing. Boeing will need to prepare against upcoming lawsuits.

Current event 7

The article talks about the missing plane. It has been weeks since the plane disappeared mysteriously. Search crews have now found something that might be tied to the lost plane. A Chinese boat picked up two pulses. This could be the new lead to the discovery of the plane.

I connect to this article because I have been following this plane ever since its disappearance. This relates to my history class because we are talking about inventions right now. In a few years this plane will be in history books and the FAA will change its rules to prevent this from repeating.

I feel that search crews have took to long to find the plane. If there were any survivors, it will be difficult for them to survive this long since the plane's disappearance. I will now be worry when I aboard an airplane, hopefully the FAA will crack down on its rules and regulations

If you have another element that you would like to discuss on this question, get the okay from me before proceeding. Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The author uses headings by listing out the possibilities vs the doubts of finding the plane. The author listed four reasons to believe, one example is
"1) The frequency doesn't occur in nature.
The Chinese Haixun 01 patrol ship detected pulses at a frequency of 37.5 kHz, the Chinese state-run Xinhua news agency reported. That's the same frequency of black box pingers -- and that frequency is no accident. The pingers were designed to have that frequency because it does not occur in nature."

The author has divided the outcomes up; he uses six reasons to doubt the pulses. The author states
"6) The underwater search of a vast area started only recently.
The search area is so large, and the underwater search has just begun. It almost defies belief that the pingers could be found so soon. But then again, almost everything about this case defies belief." By the author using headings for the pros and cons of the pulses he lets the reader make up his own mind. The author enables the reader to make its own assumption of the article instead of trying to pursue a point of view.

Current Event #6

The article talks about a satellite spotting objects that may lead to the plane that randomly disappeared. A satellite spotted objects but search crews have not being able to locate the objects. Australia, New Zealand and the U.S are currently in search of the mysterious objects.

I can connect to this article because in History we are talking about urbanization and inventions. With all the technology that exist, how could a plane disappear. The FAA needs to come up with something to prevent that form ever happening.

This article is scary because with all the technology that we have, we still find the mysterious objects, never less, the actual plane. I really hope that searchers are able to locate those objects. This affects me because now I am scared to get in a plane.

How does the author use language to advance her point of view? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The author is able to advance her point by stating harsh facts such as "Flight 370 vanished 14 days ago with 239 people aboard." The reality of the authors writing makes people aware of the situation. "Military surveillance planes, a commercial jet and two merchant ships combing the area failed to find any trace of the objects, which were spotted Sunday by a satellite in the treacherous waters of the southern Indian Ocean." said the author as he stated the level of difficulty of the search for Flight 370. Without those facts the readers would not understand the seriousness of the situation.

Current event 5

The article is about a commercial plane full of passengers losing contact with the air control tower. Operator are trying to contact the loss plane, but so far have not had any luck. The plane was suppose to land at Beijing from Kuala Lumpur.

This article relates to class because I had to research technology and science. How is it possible that in the 21 century a plane can lose contact with the air control tower? You would think something like this would be a problem of the 20th century.

I believe that authorities need to do everything in their power to locate this plane. This is scary, reading this article will make me think twice before hoping in a plane. It is hard to believe and scary that something like this can happen to you.

What is the purpose for using [statistics/quotations/headings/bullets/personal experience] (choose one of the options and write only on it.) If you have another element that you would like to discuss on this question, get the okay from me before proceeding. Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The purpose of quotations in this article is to hear an opinion or point of view of someone with the experience on the subject. The article talks about a loss plane but a retired pilot, Capt. Jim Tilmon stresses the danger by saying, "It doesn't sound very good, that the route is mostly overland, which means that there would be plenty of antennae, radar and radios to contact the plane." Tilmon also stated "I've been trying to come up with every scenario that I could just to explain this away, but I haven't been very successful." The quotes of Tilmon gave the audience the realization of how serious this is.

Galaxy S5

The article talks about Samsung launching the new Galaxy S5. The article compares and contrasts the S5 to the S4. The new phone is water proof and dust proof. The S5 has a better battery life than the S4.

I can connect to this article because we use phones every day. A new phone will improve our life style; this phone has the capacities needed for our everyday life. I like this article because it tells me the qualities of the S5; this article will affect the decision whether I want the phone or not.

What is the author’s point of view, and how does it impact the overall effect of the text? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The author uses third point of view to address his audience, as he states "Samsung had a few tricks up its sleeve for its top-of-the-line Android phone." The author impacted the reader describing the phones capabilities. “Galaxy S5 is completely protected against dust, and can resist water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes" said the author. By using third point of view the author can inform the reader about the S5 without putting his personal opinion in the article.

Michael Sam is gay

This article is about Michael Sam being gay. Sam is one of the major prospects for the NFL.Sam told ESPN that he was openly and proudly gay. This is a very hard thing to do, especially in a sport. Teammates will look at you differently for being gay. This connects to society because he is going to be bullied, just as it happens in schools across America. This relates to class because he will be judge just like people were judge in The Crucible.I think it is bad idea to become publically gay in a professional sport. He will face many issues regarding his sexuality.Teammates will not look at him the same or appreciate sharing a locker room with him.

How does the structure of the text refine and support the author’s claim?
The structure of the text supports the author’s claim by clearly and quickly stating Sam’s sexuality and the difficulties he will face . The author wasted no time to say  “Michael Sam, an All-American and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, has come out as gay.” Freeman understands the trouble that Sam will face as he stated “Sam will have to withstand being the center of attention outside and inside the locker room. And many believe his teammates may have a hard time playing alongside him.”
